What is Sioux Falls SNIP
The Sioux Falls Spay / Neuter Incentive Program is a joint effort between Almost Home Canine Rescue of Madison, South Dakota and the South Dakota Coalition for Companion Animals of Sioux Falls.
Almost Home has successfully managed a spay / neuter assistance program in the Madison area for over 6 years. Through donations and grants they have helped low income families receive veterinary care for their cats and dogs. Often families from neighboring communities, including Sioux Falls, have approached them for help.
In 2009 Almost Home partnered with SDCCA to bring this program to Sioux Falls. Through an application process, families submit their pet, it's age, length of ownership, and proof of some type of assistance program eligibility to be considered for SNIP. The program successfully launched in January of 2010.
Currently funded through July with a grant received by Almost Home, the two groups have begun working on raising funds to continue the program. It is set up to approve 5 applications per month. Everyone involved has been overwhelmed by the number of applications coming in and saddened by how many turned away due to lack of funds. The sheer number of applicants defines the need for this type of program in a city of this size.
The benefits of spay / neuter:
- increased health benefits for the life of the pet
- encourages maintain vaccination status because owners must vaccinate to receive surgical services
- lessens the number of unwanted litters, which often become a burden on city resources
- decreases aggression & poor behaviors in many pets, lessening the likely hood of bite incidents
- decreases the likelihood of an owned pet becoming a stray as they do not roam looking for a mate
- families that seek out vet care are more likely to receive educational opportunities from their vet on pet care & socialization
- the CDC recommends spay/neuter for community health & safety

The benefits of supporting Sioux Falls SNIP
- you will be helping families in your own community
- SNIP helps cats & dogs preventing increased numbers of both species
- to qualify the pet must already be owned for 6 months or more, showing they have long term investment in keeping the animal safe
- increase the number of pets current on vaccinations as the owner must show proof of vaccinations prior to services
- there are no overhead costs to SNIP, it is staffed by volunteers, all money invested is used for care of animals or minimal program maintenance.
- currently SNIP works with veterinarians in Sioux Falls for services at full price. Money spent on services stays in Sioux Falls and supports locally owned business.
- these pets are already in the community. The families will continue to elect not to alter their pet if they can not find assistance to do so. Helping those pet owning families keeps safer, healthier pets in our neighborhoods.
The needs of Sioux Falls SNIP
- the average cost for services per animal is $150.00
- SNIP is committed to helping pets & protecting others, so if vaccinations are necessary those costs must be included
- SNIP currently serves 5 animals per month, but is turning away many more, we would like to help more families do the responsible thing in caring for their pets
- SNIP will run out of funds at this rate in June 2010. We have a short term goal of raising $4000.00 to fund the remainder of 2010 and a long term goal of on going funding for the program.
If you would like to support Sioux Falls SNIP contact us today. All funds are donated to Almost Home Canine Rescue, an incorporated 501c3 non profit organization.
